About Joshua Dusek
By Joshua Dusek
Joshua Dusek is a speaker and educator located primarily in Utah and Arizona. With strengths in both keynote speaking and teaching, he aims to provide as much value as possible through his talks centered on the connection between vision science and leadership qualities such as optimism, goal setting, and organizational psychology. Since graduating with honors from the University of Arizona, he is continuing his educational and professional pursuits as a Doctor of Optometry Candidate at Rocky Mountain University in Provo, Utah.
He has been speaking for over six years in academic, professional, and athletic organizations. In addition to his keynote speeches, he holds significant experience in classroom and group teaching during his time as an educator and athletic coach. He specializes in teaching science research-based principles including topics in research methodology, statistics, project design, research ethics, statistical programming, and for younger audiences, science fair education and motivation.
Research has always been a large part of his life starting in high school, he was able to impress judges at community, regional, and state level science fair competitions with his research in pharmacological biochemistry. These skills got him the honor of attending the Keep Engaged Youth in Science (KEYS) internship hosted by the BIO5 Institute at the University of Arizona. His assistance on large research projects in pharmacogenomics helped him earn the prestigious award of Baird Scholar through the Arizona Honors College. During his time in Tucson, he was able to learn and assist in a diverse array of projects in subjects including human development, artificial intelligence, ocular disease, ocular pharmacology, and neuropharmacology. Today his clinical research interests focus primarily on functional vision including binocular vision, amblyopia, myopia control, vision therapy, and sports vision as well as ocular pharmacology including treatments for glaucoma and dry eye disease.
Although research and formal academics have been a large part of his speaking and professional career, Joshua credits most of his leadership education to his time spent in sports and athletics. After a multi-sport varsity career in high school, he took his knowledge and educational skills to coach during his time in Tucson. He coached three seasons of basketball for Tucson Unified School District and coached the Flowing Wells High School Track and Field for 3 years starting as an assistant coach and working his way to head coach of the program. In addition to coaching he worked as a personal trainer and created his own LLC, Numen Fitness and Performance. These experiences in athletics working with students, clients, fellow coaches, and administration gave Joshua a unique viewpoint on the world of coaching and leadership. He includes many of these leadership themes and lessons in his talks and lectures, either directly or indirectly.
Joshua lives by the principle that education brings opportunity. He enjoys any opportunity to speak and teach on any subject he can. Currently he serves as professional development chair for his cohort’s leadership and as a teaching assistant/tutor for a graduate level Biostatistics/Research Methodology and Medical Pharmacology course. When not working on speaking opportunities and optometry coursework, he enjoys playing in basketball leagues and pro-ams, kickboxing, and working on his novel.
